One of the legends of Alabama barbecue, the late Robert “Big Bob” Gibson of Decatur’s Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q, will be inducted into the national American Royal Barbecue Hall of Fame later this year.

Gibson, who is credited with inventing Alabama white barbecue sauce, joins two other posthumous inductees and four living inductees in the Barbecue Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

Big Bob Gibson’s Chris Lilly, a multiple Memphis in May world champion pitmaster who is married to Bob Gibson’s great-granddaughter, is already a member of the American Royal Barbecue Hall, having been inducted in 2016.

The 2024 inductees will be recognized during the 44th American Royal World Series of Barbecue, which takes place Oct. 30 through Nov. 3 in Kansas City, Kansas.

The American Royal Barbecue Hall of Fame is a national organization dedicated to recognizing, documenting and preserving the heritage of barbecue.
