Authorities said that one person was killed and at least 11 others seriously injured early Sunday when gunfire broke out during a house party in Catawba County, North Carolina. The names of the victims and any potential suspects have not been released to the public.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement posted to Facebook that officers from the Hickory Police Department responded to a call around 12:45 a.m. on June 1 to report multiple people shot at a home on Walnut Acres Drive in the Mountain View area (about 57 miles northwest of Charlotte). The incident resulted in at least 12 people being shot. One person was pronounced dead, another was critically wounded, and several others were hospitalized with serious injuries, officials said.

During a press briefing, Major Aaron Turk of the sheriff’s office said the gunfire erupted during a party being held at the residence. When deputies arrived, they found multiple victims and immediately began providing emergency care. Investigators from the sheriff’s office, Hickory Police Department, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are currently working together to determine what led to the violence and to identify those involved. At this time, no suspects have been taken into custody.

According to ABC News, law enforcement reported that roughly 100 people were at the gathering when one or more individuals began shooting. Authorities have confirmed that more than one shooter was involved, though they have yet to determine an exact number. Turk noted that the violence extended beyond the house itself, spreading into the street, the backyard, and even into the neighboring yard, saying: “there does appear to be a specific reason behind this incident, possibly connected to the party itself.”

The investigation is still active, and officials are urging anyone with knowledge about what happened to reach out to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office by calling 828-464-3112.
