The 20-Minute Rule: Unveiling the Impatience Epidemic in Movies

My husband and I were ready to watch a movie on Friday on Netflix. Unfortunately, the movie I wanted wasn’t available due to a problem with the app, so we opted for another one, because you get in that frame of mind #IWannaWatchaMovie.

I usually do research on the movies I wanna watch: check IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes and then a social media check. This is all after I have seen the trailer.  I love a good trailer. Well,  after twenty minutes of this second choice movie, my husband was playing a game on his phone and I didn’t feel I was invested enough to be the explainer if he popped back in later in the movie, so I bailed. I only once ever walked out of a theater because the movie was THAT bad. Now, if I’m not engaged in that first twenty minutes, they’ve lost me. There HAVE been a few times where I was told by someone else to give it a second chance where I did and it was good, but that’s not often. I also don’t care for long movies in theaters anymore. It’s so hard to pick a place in the movie where you might not miss too much. That large Coke Zero I used to wash down my popcorn with isn’t letting me sit through three hours without a pit stop and there’s no pause button in the theater, but don’t think I haven’t tried.

So, what’s the deal? Are we all just impatient now, or are movies getting worse? Either way, I’m sticking to my twenty-minute rule
