The Memorial Day Weekend is seen as the unofficial start of summer, leading to an increase in travel and car wrecks. And with that, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office warns of a higher rate of drunk driving wrecks during holiday weekends. Additionally, the increase in travel puts a strain on the state’s blood supply, with Lifesouth Community Blood Center reporting a one-day supply when they aim for a four-to-five-day supply.
Blood transfusions are needed every two seconds, and having a supply on hand is crucial for medical emergencies. Doctors stress the importance of being prepared to transfuse patients in case of trauma or medical procedures.
We all get busy and distracted….weekly and monthly donors are not donating consistently. No one does it on purpose…it’s life. But, we all can take a step back and calendar (if you’re healthy) a time to donate blood.
